Dorlean Bell honored with college’s top mentoring prize

Bell’s generosity and kindness to students are well-known across campus. This week, Bell will receive the college’s prestigiousPhee Boon Kang’73 Prize for Excellence in Advising and Mentoring.

For almost four decades, Beloit College housekeeper Dorlean Bell has been a friend and mentor to thousands of students missing home and navigating a new environment. This week, Bell will receive the college’s prestigiousPhee Boon Kang’73 Prize for Excellence in Advising and Mentoring.

Students say Bell is a beacon of light to everyone around her and positively impacts the lives of so many students.

“She is the best, kindest, and most amazing person you will ever meet,” one student says. “I love talking to her every time I see her, and she always smiles and wishes you a good day.”

Since joining the campus staff in 1984, Bell has had her own way of mentoring students. She takes time to get to know her colleagues and build meaningful relationships across campus, offering guidance and support whenever needed. She’s also never afraid to try new things and is always the first to volunteer on projects.

“Dorlean has always been willing to go above and beyond to support her colleagues and help them achieve their goals,” says Beloit College President Scott Bierman “Dorlean is a very happy and helpful person who loves to joke and have fun. Her positivity shines through in everything she does, and in every interaction she has across campus.”

“We are grateful for Dorlean’s many years of service and the positive impact she has had on our community,” Bierman says. “Her dedication, kindness, and leadership have made a real difference, and we are lucky to witness her continued inspiration and support of others.”

The Phee Boon Kang Prize for Excellence in Advising and Mentoring recognizes and honors faculty or staff members for their excellent advising and mentoring. Kang, a 1973 Beloit College graduate and a Board of Trustees member, supports this award.
